Detroit Shoreway Community Development Organization

The Detroit Shoreway Community Development Organization (DSCDO) was founded in 1973 as a grassroots organization to revitalize the Detroit Shoreway neighborhood in Cleveland, Ohio. Its mission is: "Through collaboration, DSCDO guides the physical, economic and social development of the Detroit Shoreway neighborhood toward an improved quality of life." DSCDO seeks to make the Detroit Shoreway neighborhood the premiere lakefront community in Northeast Ohio while also assisting low- to moderate-income individuals and families and creating a socially and economically diverse neighborhood. DSCDO is pioneering cutting edge community revitalization strategies like the Gordon Square Arts District which is a national model for how the Arts can be a catalyst for economic development and the EcoVillage, a national demonstration project funded by the U.S. EPA for sustainable urban development. Battery Park, featuring lakefront living, is one of the hottest housing developments in Northeast Ohio and is an excellent example of New Urbanism development. Retaining the neighborhood’s character as a mixed-income community is being accomplished through the development of affordable housing units, a core value for DSCDO. DSCDO and its non-profit partners have developed over 1,000 affordable housing units during the past decade. Additionally, government funded public infrastructure improvements including the Detroit Avenue Streetscape Project and the Lakefront Plan are spurring investment in the neighborhood. DSCDO has had an integral role in the planning and development of both projects. DSCDO continues to also maintain strong relationships with neighborhood residents and other stakeholders. An average of 300 people per month attend block club meetings, supported by DSCDO, and DSCDO works with business organizations on Detroit and Lorain Avenues.
